don't get me wrong
I hate sparrows
but from this angle
(looking up
from the floor of Washington Square Park
at the statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi,
1807-1882),
a small bird
thrusting its beak
into the emptiness beneath
the general's sword,
their warm-blooded gazes aligned,
this one seems to have conquered
a bit of his aspect
with stately vigor
the little pest trills
off to unify the grass blades
or something

Summer 2004: I don't actually hate sparrows. This poem concerns the statue in Washington Square Park, Manhattan, of one of my favorite romantic heroes, Giuseppe Garibaldi--the Sword of Italian Unification. Written the same day as the pigeon poem.

Lovely little turns of phrase. Trilling off with stately vigor indeed.
